Did Faith live? Will Frank Randall’s revelations in *The Soul of a Rebel *come to pass? And can Claire and Jamie’s story truly have a happy ending?

Producers have plenty of loose threads to tie up when the eighth and final season of *Outlander *premieres. And how they intend to do so is as closely guarded of a secret as the location of that Jacobite gold. It’s so closely guarded, in fact, that even stars Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan don’t know how the series concludes.

"I am as curious and in anticipation of seeing the rest of the season as everyone else will be," says Balfe, who has seen only the first three episodes of season 8 so far. **

That’s all due to the subterfuge of executive producer Matthew B. Roberts, who tells ** in our latest digital cover story that he wrote and shot multiple endings for the long-running series — to both avoid spoilers and give himself options in the edit bay (even though he says he’s had a particular ending in mind for years).

"There's a small handful of people that have seen it all the way through," Roberts says of the true conclusion. "I think keeping it close to the vest and a surprise to a lot of people made it a little more special."

In order for his ruse to actually work, Roberts says he ensured the multiple endings rang as true as possible. "They all could have been the ending, and that's why people believed them," he says.

"There was some fun to having multiple endings — like the Who Shot J.R.? moment, if I’m going to date myself," says executive producer Maril Davis. "How many different ways could it go?"

While the cast remains in the dark about how the show actually wraps up, a few actors admitted they do know how their character’s arc concludes.

"Brianna's at peace, and that makes me very happy," Sophie Skelton says of Claire and Jamie’s fiery daughter.

David Berry, whose Lord John Grey has been hopelessly in love with Jamie for years, had similar feelings upon learning his character’s fate. "Something I get asked a lot is, 'Will John find love of his own?' I think this season will address that head on," Berry says. "Lord John's story ends in a place that I'm very happy with."

Another lingering mystery — and one that’s haunted fans since the very first episode of *Outlander *— is the so-called “ghost of Jamie Fraser.” When Claire and Frank (Tobias Menzies) retreat to Inverness on holiday following the end of WWII, Frank spies the spectre of a Highlander staring up into Claire’s window. Given that Jamie isn’t able to time travel, could this really be him? And if so, how will producers make it make sense? It’s an explanation the cast have been pushing for, though Roberts remains coy.

"What we tried to do is answer as many questions as we could authentically," he says. "There's so many great storylines that get tied up — whether it's in a tight bow or a very loose bow, that’s for the fans to judge."**

*Outlander*'s final season premieres March 6 on Starz.
